Your child may be intelligent
and articulate, but you’ve started to notice they are having
trouble with their letters and sounds. They know all the correct
answers when you quiz them on their upcoming test, but they fail
once they take the written exam. You’ve also noticed they
write their words and numbers backwards and out of sequence, and
they’re uncoordinated when it comes to sports.
These are all classic dyslexia symptoms and you should consult a
specialist if your child is exhibiting at least 10 of them. Dyslexia
symptoms can vary from the physical to the mental. Dyslexia is a
learning disability that affects a person’s reading abilities
when their brain cannot process graphic symbols.
Dyslexia symptoms can also include:
- Difficulty copying from a book or from the
board at school
- Written work is disorganized
- Difficulty remembering content from a book
or movie
- Not coordinated during sports activities
- Trouble with sequences
- Letters and numbers are reversed. This is
the most common of the dyslexia symptoms.
These are the common dyslexia symptoms,
but parents, teachers and loved ones should also look beyond these.
Dyslexia symptoms can also involve a child’s withdrawal from
their friends, acting out and overall depression.
