Wrist Tendonitis: Also Known As Tenosynovitis

Tendonitis is characterized by an inflammation of the tendons, which are the thick, fibrous tissues that attach muscle to bone. On the wrist there are a number of tendons, and the constant use and maneuvering of the wrist can commonly result in wrist tendonitis. Some of the common causes of wrist tendonitis are:
  • Sports related injuries such as throwing or catching
  • Sewing, writing, or any sort of activity that calls for tight gripping for extended periods of time
  • Using a mouse for extended periods of time
  • Typing
  • Age – As we age our tendons lose moisture and elasticity, so, as we age, we become more prone to developing wrist tendonitis.
Symptoms of Wrist Tendonitis:

The symptoms associated with wrist tendonitis are pain, inflammation, and swelling of the wrist. The pain may be debilitating enough to prevent normal daily activities that involve the use of the affected hand. The wrist can also become stiff, and there may be limited motion.

Wrist Tendonitis Treatment:

The best way to alleviate the pain from wrist tendonitis is to use preventative measures such as stretching the wrist and fingers before and after repetitive activities. You should also make sure that you have an ergonomic work station that provides the proper wrist support.

The treatment for wrist tendonitis is basically the same you would use for most muscle related injuries. You will want to rest the wrist for a few days if possible. You will also want to apply both hot and cold compresses to the affected wrist, in association with some form of brace or support for the affected wrist. To help alleviate the pain you can take over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen. Some people find positive results from alternative therapies that can be used to both help alleviate the condition, as well as to help prevent the condition from occurring initially. If any of these treatments do not work to alleviate the pain, and after a week or two you are still suffering from wrist tendonitis, you should contact your physician in order to make sure that there are no underlying conditions that may be causing your prolonged pain.
