Thumb Tendonitis: Symptoms and Treatment

Tendonitis is characterized by an inflammation of the tendons, which are the thick, fibrous tissues that attach muscle to bone. In thumb tendonitis the tendons that connect the muscles of the thumb to the wrist become inflamed. The causes of thumb tendonitis can vary, but it is generally caused by repetitive movement or awkward positioning of the thumb for extended periods of time. New mothers are the most commonly afflicted because of the awkward positioning necessary when caring for a newborn.

Thumb Tendonitis Symptoms:
  • Pain in the thumb and wrist
  • Pain in the forearm
  • Swelling of the thumb
  • Numbness of the thumb and forefinger
  • A clicking or ticking sound when you move your thumb
Thumb Tendonitis Treatment:

As with all forms of tendonitis, you should begin by isolating and resting the area as much as possible. You should also apply hot and cold compresses, and you can take an over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen. If the pain doesn’t subside you should contact your physician in order to determine if there is an underlying condition that may be causing your thumb tendonitis or to receive a more effective pain treatment.
