Degenerative
Disc Disease: Symptoms and Treatment
Degenerative disc disease
(DDD) is a common age-related condition that involves the breakdown,
or degeneration, of the vertebral discs that make up the spine.
These spinal discs act as a cushion between the spinal vertebrae,
and as you age, the cushions may break down or lose their moisture,
which can result in back pain. When the pain is isolated to the
upper back and neck region, it is classified as cervical degenerative
disc disease. It is possible, however, to have degenerative disc
disease and not feel any pain. The degeneration of DDD can be the
result of aging, but it is also possible to develop it as the result
of an injury.
Degenerative disc disease symptoms include:
- Local or isolated back or neck pain
- Sitting or standing may cause or worsen
the pain
- Limited mobility
- Limited strength in upper arms and back
- Activities such as walking, running or even
simply changing position may ease the pain
Degenerative disc disease treatment:
The treatment your doctor chooses to give you for degenerative disc
disease varies depending on the severity of your symptoms. If the
pain can be managed with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications,
or NSAIDs, along with core-strengthening exercises, then you may
not have to resort to more drastic options such as surgical spinal
fusion or disc replacement.
Ironically, if left untreated degenerative disc disease may actually
treat itself. As the tissue breaks down and loses moisture the vertebrae
become destabilized; however, after a period of time it is possible
for the vertebrae to stabilize and the pain to lessen or disappear
altogether.
If you feel you may be suffering from degenerative disc disease
or cervical degenerative disc disease, you should contact your physician.
