B-3 (Vitamin B3-Niacin, Vitamin B3, Vit.B3, Niacin)
Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin,
is a vitamin which is thought to act as a coenzyme for normal
DNA synthesis while helping to maintain the integrity of the
genome of the individual. It is also known to aid the body in
the promotion of general growth, cellular development, the release
of energy from body stores, blood cell count and normal functioning
of the nervous system, and related tissues. Vitamin B-12 is
also thought necessary for healthy skin, hair and nails.
Results of a recent meta-analysis in Oxford, England at the
Radcliffe Infirmary demonstrated that Vitamin B12 and Folic
Acid (and to lesser extend by Vitamin B6, whose presence is
necessary to convert homocysteine to the amino acid L-cysteine)
were necessary vitamins involved in the body's cleansing process
called methylation, wherein dangerous homocysteine levels are
reduced. Lowering homocysteine levels has been shown to reduce
the risk of cardiovascular disease, for as much as 30%-40%.
Dosages of Vitamin B12 can be increased up to 1 mg for these
purposes. (BMJ, 316(7135):894-898, March1998)
