Buckthorn (Frangula Alnus Mill, Black Alder Tree)
Buckthorn is a mild herb useful
in purging the system, having some historical precedence of
being used as a laxative for constipation by the early Native
Americans. Pharmaceutical action is derived from 1,8-dihydroxy-anthracene
which has a laxative effect. These compounds increase the motility
of the colon by inhibiting stationary and stimulating propulsive
contractions. This results in accelerated intestinal passage
and, because of the shortened contraction time, a reduction
in liquid absorption through the lumen.
In addition, stimulation of active chloride secretion increases
the water and electrolyte content of intestinal contents. As
with all natural laxatives, prolonged use of Buckthorn should
be avoided as it could upset potassium balance, as well as the
balance of other electrolytes.
