Zinc (Zinc Ascorbate, Zinc Oxide)
Zinc is an essential mineral. Found
in almost every cell in the body, zinc is involved in the
activity of about 100 different biochemical reactions. Zinc
is also very important to the immune system, wound healing,
DNA synthesis, and human growth from fetus to adolescence.
Zinc can be consumed in a variety of foods including oysters,
red meat, and poultry. Several studies have been conducted
to discover the link between zinc and the duration of the
common cold in humans. Some studies indicated that zinc reduced
the length of common cold symptoms by half, but other studies
did not produce such positive results, meaning additional
research is needed.
This mineral is thought to be nutritionally
essential for protein synthesis and normal brain functioning.
It is an important nutrient for healing, sense of taste and
the structuring of collagen, helping to prevent dry skin and
stretch marks, and nutritionally promoting the body to heal
blemish marks. Without enough zinc, a Vitamin A deficiency can
occur even though the intake of that vitamin appears adequate.
Zinc also helps prevent premature hair loss, brittle or spotted
nails, and is thought to improve skin conditions in general.
Quaintly, it is thought to aid in the relief for bad breath,
and has been a "savior" for those who love garlic and onions
but hate the breath that is subsequently imparted by these strong
roots. As it has been said, "Take zinc -- don't stink!" Also
