White Pine Bark (Pinus Maritima)
White pine bark comes
from the inner bark of a white pine tree. The inner bark of
pine trees has been used in medicine for centuries and is
still used in cough remedies. White pine bark is known for
its antioxidant properties. White pine bark contains proanthocyanidin,
a bioflavonoid that is taken for arthritis, bruises, gum disease,
ulcers, and vascular problems. White pine bark is believed
to be beneficial in treating allergies, strengthening connective
tissue, and increasing the elasticity of the skin. As a circulatory
stimulant, it is believed that white pine bark will help in
preventing the onset of cold and flu viruses.
This particular bark has
historically been used as a rich source of Vitamin C-like
compounds and the Proanthocyanidian Bioflavonoids. These powerful
antioxidant ingredients have been found to be useful for immune
system enhancement, as well as providing strength and integrity
to connective tissue, capillaries and veins, thus useful in
strengthening the fragility of capillaries and preventing,
if not diminishing varicose veins. The proprietary proanthocyanidian
antioxidant complex, Pycnogenolr, is notably derived from
white pine bark alone, and therefore does not contain all
the active bioflavonoids present in white pine bark.
