Vitamin C3-Ascorbyl Palmitate
Vitamin C3, or
Ascorbyl Palmitate, is also called Vitamin C ester. (Vitamin
C ester should not be confused with Ester-C, or Calcium Ascorbate.
They are two different forms of Vitamin C.) Ascorbyl Palmitate
is Vitamin C that has been turned into a fatty acid. While “regular”
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is water soluble, Ascorbyl Palmitate
is a fat-soluble form of Vitamin C. Ascorbyl Palmitate is advantageous
in skin creams because it mixes well with oils and can be absorbed
into the skin as Vitamin C. Since Vitamin C is known for its
importance in collagen production and antioxidant functions,
it is believed that applying Ascorbyl Palmitate on the skin
plays an important role in reducing the signs of aging.
One of the 6 stable
esters of Vitamin C, Ascorbyl Palmitate is a cousin to the
well known Ascorbic Acid. Ascorbic Acid in all of its forms
has been credited with being responsible for the health of
blood vessels, connective tissue, collagen, bones, cartilage,
eyes, gums, teeth, and cell integrity.
Ascorbyl Palmitate is the
form of Vitamin C, or Ascorbic Acid, that can be absorbed
into the skin for the prevention of age spots, sun damage,
and wrinkles.
As a cofactor, Vitamin C
also helps the oil-secreting glands function properly, keeping
the skin from drying out. Further, this vitamin may also be
helpful in keeping hair from getting tangled, matted, snarled
and broken. There are 6 stable esters of vitamin C, all of
which prove useful in the body. These include: Vitamin C1-Ascorbic
Acid, VItamin C2-Dehyroascorbic Acid, Vitamin C3-Ascorbyl
Palmitate, VItamin C4-Calcium Ascorbate, Vitamin C5-Isoascorbic
Acid, Vitamin C6-Calcium Isoascorbate, and lastly, Ascorbign,
or provitamin C (the direct precursor of ascorbic acid) is
also useful and appears to potentiate, if not accelerate,
vitamin C activity.
