Vitamin C2-Dehydroascorbic Acid
Dehydroascorbic
Acid, or Vitamin C2, is abbreviated as DHA. Dehydroascorbic
Acid is a derivative of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). It is also
known as a precursor to Vitamin C and an oxidized form of Ascorbic
Acid. One way that Dehydroascorbic Acid is beneficial is because
Ascorbic Acid is not able to reach the brain since it cannot
cross the blood-brain barrier. Being a different form of Ascorbic
Acid, it is believed that Dehydroascorbic Acid can cross the
blood-brain barrier and be beneficial to the brain, possibly
in preventing strokes. Dehydroascorbic Acid contains similar
antioxidant properties to Ascorbic Acid, so when Dehydroascorbic
Acid crosses the blood-brain barrier, it could heal damage to
the brain caused by free radicals. All
forms of Vitamin C, including Dehydroascorbic Acid,
are well known for their healing and building
properties in the body. Vitamin C is vital to connective tissues,
blood vessels, bones, cartilage, eyes, gums, teeth, and wound
repair.
Vitamin C and its various
forms have been shown to be beneficial to lowering cholesterol,
absorbing iron, and boosting the body’s immune system
in times of stress and illness. For the skin, Vitamin C prevents
premature aging and sun damage. Vitamin C is also helpful in
preventing skin and hair from drying out. All 6 derivatives
of Vitamin C, including Dehydroascorbic Acid, are useful to
the body because they are able to be absorbed in different ways.
