Viscum album (European Mistletoe, Mistletoe)
Viscum album, or
European Mistletoe, has been used for centuries to treat headaches,
seizures, and other conditions. In modern-day Europe, Viscum
album is used to treat cancer. Extracts are taken from the
leafy outshoots and berries of Viscum album and the extracts
are taken by mouth. Some extracts are available as injections
by prescription in Europe, but these injections are not available
in the United States. Lab tests have indicated that Viscum
album extract kills cancer cells and boosts the immune system.
Both European and American Mistletoe are poisonous when eaten
raw, and American Mistletoe is unsafe for medicinal use. Viscum
album, or European Mistletoe, is generally considered safe
once it has been processed for human consumption.
A parasitic shrub grown in
Central and Southern Europe. The viscid berries are a source
of birdlime. Historically used a treatment for epilepsy amongst
the Romans. Used in China (viscum coloratum) medicinally for
hypertension, rheumatic fever, spontaneous abortion, epilepsy,
hysteria, and neuritis. Prescribed as antiphlogistic, antispasmodic,
carminative, sedative and is currently being developed for
coronary problems. Proteins known as viscotoxins are cytotoxic
and show anticancer activity in animals. Natural occurring
GABA causes hypotensive activity and there are several antiinflammatory
triterpernes.
This may explain why Mistletoe is synergistic with the action
of Hawthorn, acting upon the cardiovascular system. It is
known to lower blood pressure while also preventing calcium
from being deposited pathologically on the walls of arteries
and veins, thus aiding in the prevention of hardening of the
arteries. Mistletoe is thought to help veins and arteries
which have already become calcified to become more elastic
and flexible, and thus is an excellent addition to any oral
chelation formula. And too, because of this unique quality
of preventing calcium from becoming pathological, it is useful
in the prevention of gall and kidneys stones.
