Taraxacum officinale (Asteraceae, Dandelion Root)
Taraxacum officinale, more commonly
called dandelion, was historically used in Europe and China
for feverish symptoms. The first known mention of the Dandelion,
(from the French 'dent de lion': 'lion's tooth'), is as 'Taxacon'
in Arabic texts of the 10th and 11th century. Fresh dandelion
juice was once in great demand for its diuretic, antirheumatic,
aperient qualities. The roots were often ground and used as
coffee.
This common herb has always been thought to be an unsightly
weed for most weekend gardeners, but it holds much more majesty
than most know. It is high in Vitamin A and C, Niacin (B3) and
various minerals. Latex found in the leaves is an excellent
naturally rich emollient used for facial steams, a cleansing
milk and moisturizer.
The roots are thought to increase the natural defensive fluids
of the body and Dandelion flower, too, is a powerful cleanser
of the system, purifying and eradicating harmful materials that
become accumulated due to incessant poor health and illness.
Dandelion has been a useful agent known to help the body relieve
its stores of water (diuretic) as well as being felicitous for
relieving stress and calming the nerves. In fact, it has been
shown that in the spring harvest, the plant is known to contain
mannite or mannitol, a substance known to be specifically useful
for calming the nervous and generally reducing excessive restlessness
and tenseness.
