Silymarin (Silybum Marianum, Milk Thistle)

Milk Thistle, also known as Silymarin, is an ancient remedy where in 1000 A.D., Pliny is recorded to have used it as a nutritional remedy to build the strength of his patients. In the 16th century, a physician actually used the crushed seeds of Milk Thistles for liver ailments, a practice which continues in Europe today in the treatment of chronic liver problems and general detoxification. Silymarin extract and its major components have been shown in animal and human studies to exert a hepatoprotectant effect.

The compounds or active phytomedicinals found in Milk Thistle appear to reduce liver damage caused by biological and chemical insult, and thus can protect the liver from poisons and pollutants, such as alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, acetaminophen overdose and Deathcap mushroom (Amanita phalloides) which causes death within a day. Silymarin has been demonstrated to be effective in treating a number of chronic liver problems including liver inflammation, chronic cirrhosis of the liver, toxic metabolic liver disease, acute viral hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, fatty degeneration of the liver and other diseases of unknown etiology. Positive effects have been observed in alcohol-induced and iatrogenic (drug-induced) forms of cirrhosis.

The active phytomedicinals include the family of silymarin (a number of flavonoids silmarin, silybin, sildianin, and silychristin). Silymarin appears to act upon cell membranes, stabilizing them while encouraging the regenerative of cells destroyed during the normal detoxifying process. The mechanism of action of silymarin involves altering the membranes of hepatic cells to inhibit passage of toxins and increasing cellular regeneration by stimulating protein synthesis. Recent research has indicated that silymarin helps to protect against depletion of the antioxidant amino acid L-Glutathione in liver cells. Milk thistle is also used for the increased production of bile, which acts to emulsify fats, and thus aids in digestion of fats and useful for psoriasis.
