Sambucus nigra (Elder Tree, Sambucol, Caprifoliace)
Sambucus nigra is a small perennial
deciduous tree that is a part of the folklore in several countries
where ancient legends link it with magic. Sambucus nigra was
once called the "medicine chest" of the "country people" because
it was touted to have innumerable uses. For centuries, a flavorful
and full-bodied wine has been made from both the berries and
the flowers of Sambucus nigra, a wonderful thing amongst the
leprechauns! An infusion of the sweet-scented flowers can be
used to soothe chills and poor health, being rich in vitamin
C. Elderflower water, too, is known to be good for the complexion
around the eyes when applied topically.
Sambucus nigra is known to be effective in soothing burning
skin and suitable for bruises and sprains. Part of its "magic"
is no doubt found in Sambucus nigra's reputation to soften skin
and remove lines from the skin, fade blemishes and freckles
and a good balm for mature or sallow skins. Probably the least
celebrated, but nonetheless important, use is in Sambucus nigra's
ability to rapidly relieve one of flu symptoms, having a number
of antiviral phytomedicinals.
