Ribes nigra (English Black Current)
Ribes nigra is a small shrub grown
throughout Europe and Central Asia, cultivated in the Himalayas.
All parts of the Ribes nigra plant produce a characteristic
scent when bruised. The berries of Ribes nigra are a deep black
and made into jams and liqueur called Cassis. The twigs and
leaves of Ribes nigra are used to treat coughs, bronchitis,
asthma and colds. The fruits are beneficial to diabetics, and
seem to help the efficiencies of the pancreas. Black currents
are also extremely rich in vitamin C and a host of beneficial
flavonoids, the latter being useful in treating liver disorders,
flushing the liver of toxins while cleansing and regenerating
intestinal flora.
