Rhamnus purshiana (Rhamnus Frangula, Buckthorn, Ca)
Rhamnus purshiana is a small bush
or shrub grown in North America and a close relative of Cascara
Sagrada, wherein the dried bark is used medicinally, as a tonic
and laxative in the colon. Rhamnus purshiana contains emodin,
purshinanin, a glucosid and cascarin. Rhamnus purshiana also
acts anthelminthically, or as a parasiticide, expelling worms
and other impurities. Buckthorn, although less powerful than
Cascara Sagrada, helps the bowels evacuate normally by stimulating
the flow of bile from the liver to the gall bladder. Like Cascara
Sagrada, Buckthorn is not habit forming when used as directed.
It also exhibits diuretic properties, reduces fever, helps relieve
gallstones, and has even been useful in the removal of worts
and the cessation of various skin problems, all of which is
attributable to the purging properties it exhibits.
