Resveratrol (Protykin)
Resveratrol is a phytoalexin,
an all natural compound found in abundance in the skin of red
grapes and most abundantly in the root of Polygonum cuspidatum
(from which Protykin is made: 20% trans-Resveratrol, 10% Emodin),
a tradtitional chinese herb also known as Hu-chang, as well
as 70 other plant species. Its now believed that the benefits
of red wine (and ordinary 100% pure grape juice!) are derived,
amongst other ingredients, from their resveratrol content. White
wine (or white grape juice) is not so beneficial as the skins
of the grapes are discarded upon first pressings, and thus very
little resveratrol is present. Resveratrol can also be found
in other foods (such as peanuts, mulberries and 70 other plant
species), but its not as abundant as it is in the red grape
skin.Phytoalexins are a group of compounds that are normally
produced during times of environmental stress or pathogenic
attack. Resveratrol, which can be extracted from the skin of
red grapes, is reported to have cancer-fighting abilities in
assays representing three major stages of carcinogenesis, as
reported in Science (Cancer Chemopreventative Activity of Resveratrol,
A Natural Product Derived From Grapes, Jang, M., et al, Vol
275, pg 218-219, 1997).
These researchers demonstrated the power of resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihyroxy-trans-stilbene,
or C14H12O3) where resveratrol inhibits cellular events associated
with tumor initiation, promotion and progression. As reported,
it acts as an anti-inflammatory due to its ability to inhibit
the cycloxygenase (COX) and hydroperoxidase acitivity (antipromotion
acitivity). On its own, COX can stimulate tumor cell growth,
suppress immune surveillance, and activate carcinogen forms
that damage genetic material. Resveratrol also induced human
promyelocytic leukemia cell differentiation (antiprogressive
activity). Resveratrol also acts as an antioxidant, antimutagen,
inducing quinone reductase activity, which detoxifies carcinogens.
In animal studies, resveratrol inhibited tumor and lesion formation
in the mammary glands and skin of mice. It is also thought that
resveratrol could play a part in the prevention of heart disease
because it also inhibits platelet aggregation and coagulation,
alters eicosanoid synthesis and modulates lipoprotein metabolism.
