Radix Astragali (Astragalus, Astragalus membranace)
Radix Astragali is used in China
to help strengthen the function of the body's defense mechanisms,
promoting possible resistance to illness and poor health, stimulating
body temperature and promoting the circulation to spread itself
more thinly. This traditional Chinese herb has recently demonstrated
effectiveness against a number of viral infections including
Cosackie B virus, an infection of the heart called viral myocarditis,
which disease currently has no treatment nor has there been
established a preventative routine.
Apparently, Radix Astragali stimulates the immune system by
increasing NK activity, and may be useful in improving the condition
of AIDS patients who are frequently attacked by this virus.
After treatment with I.V. Astragalus extract, the NK activity
was tripled, illustrating highly increased immune system activity.
Astragalus is thought to increase phagocytosis and interferon
production, increases the population of macrophages, and enhances
T-Cell formation, and overall, functions as an adaptogen helping
against the suppression of a stress-induced Immune System.
