Quercetin
Quercetin is a plant bioflavonoid
widely distributed in fruits and vegetables appears to be able
to inhibit proliferation and induce differentiation in cultured
leukemia cells. In recent studies, quercetin appeared to be
an inducer of apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in these
cells. Generally, cancer cells have managed to free themselves
from apoptosis, or regular programed cell death, and live much
longer than they should. Bioflavonoids, and especially quercetin,
may well represent a molecular rational why a diet high in fruits
and vegetables are useful anticancer nutritional strategies,
reversing the cancer cells strategy of living longer than they
should. (Csokay, B., et al., Molecular mechanisms in the anti-proliferative
action of quercetin, Life Sciences, 1997; 60, 2157-2163.)
