Progesterone
Progesterone is a naturally occurring
hormone which works with estrogen compounds. Progesterone is
generally secreted naturally in form of pregnanediol glucuronide
and has a unique physiological action, although appearing very
similar molecularly to estrogens. It generally originates in
the same cells which produces estrogen compounds, and is extremely
important in its abilities to correctly balance estrogen activity.
Under the influence of Progesterone, the numerous minute glands
which line the uterine cavity are transformed into secreting
glands. This alteration is essential in order to provide for
the implantation of a fertilized ovum and for the continuing
development of the placenta. In high doses, Progesterone as
Progestins suppress the pituitary releases of luteinizing hormone
and the hypothalamic release of the LH-releasing factor (LRF),
thus preventing ovulation, and can contribute to a contraceptive
effect. Progestins also have a thermogenic action, burning fat
at a higher rate of metabolism.Most oral contraceptives contain
both an estrogen and a progestogen. Plasma half life is only
about 5 minutes before its is converted into other substances.
