Polygalacturonic Acids (D-galacturonic acid)
The specific oxidation of the
primary alcohol group of aldoses (a common sugar) yields "uronic
acids," an important component of many polysaccharides; d-polyglacturonic
acid is one of these, being a polymer of galactans; d-glucuronic
acid and d-mannuronic acid are others of some importance. Polysaccharides
are used in the formation of much ground substance (in the form
of a felt-like matrix known as glycosaminoglycans) within cells,
necessary for cellular regeneration and growth. Polysaccharides,
in contrast to proteins and nucleic acids, form branched as
well as linear polymers.
Polysaccharides are also the basis of structural elements of
cells, giving cells their structural strength and thus an important
survival characteristic, e.g., cellulose in plants (leaves,
bark etc.) is a composite of several polysaccharides; Chitin
is also a composite of several other forms of polysaccharides,
being the structural elements of the shells of shell fish, insects
and spiders, algae and fungi. Polysaccharides are also useful
in storing energy in the form of glycogen (animal starch) and
starch (in plants).
