Phosphocreatine (creatine phosphate, creatine mono)
A chemical form of energy stored
primarily in muscle tissues, used primarily for muscle contraction
during the anaerobic phases. It is a compound of creatine and
phosphoric acid, Mol.Wt. 211, which forms readily and naturally
within the body, being made from three amino acids: arginine,
glycine, and methionine. It is the equivalent of ATP (adenosine
triphosphate), the energy molecule of the body, and acts to
provide energy for the contraction of muscle tissues. The end
product of phosphocreatine metabolism is creatinine, and is
excreted in the urine. Creatinine is often used as an index
of kidney function since a kidney malfunction will sometimes
show decreased creatinine excretion rates. The reaction occurs
thusly: Creatine + ATP = Creatine phosphate + ADP, catalyzed
by CPK (creatine phosphokinase). Creatine (monophosphate) is
used by body builders to increase muscle mass, and is one of
the few substances which will actually increase muscle mass
without exercise, although quite large amounts are needed (
upwards of 5 grams+ per day) for it to have any effect after
loading 20 grams per day for the first week. It reportedly can
help in the process of recuperation of the body after injury
or surgery as well as decrease both triglycerides and LDL cholesterol,
however there are other nutraceuticals which can provide the
same if not better response without having to consume the large
amounts of this ingredient by itself. In an average meat diet,
we naturally consume about a gram per day, and around 100-150
grams is generally stored within the body.
