Phosphatidylinositol
Phosphatidylinositol is an essential
and critical member of a class of phospholipids (phosphatides)
found in all tissues, especially in brain and nerve tissues
where it acts as a precursor for neurotransmitters. Free inositol
is also found in high concentrations within the lens of the
eye. Inositol deficiency is associated with excessive fat buildup
in the liver. Inositol, as well as choline, are often referred
to as "lipotropic substances" in that they are required for
the removal of fats from the liver and cardiovascular system.
Deprivation of phosphatidylinositol may lead to motor nerve
coordination impairment associated with diabetes and kidney
disease
