Oenothera biennis (Onagraceae, Oil of Evening Prim)
This is a plant for a moonlit
garden, an herb which opens its bright luminescent yellow flowers
to the moon, bathing all who come near with their sweet mellow
scent. As the season progresses, the flowers remain open into
the day as well.Medical research is now underway in the hopes
of discovering just how its seeds, which contain the rare and
indispensable gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA - an Essential Fatty
Acid, may alleviate PMS tension, menopausal discomfort, a host
of skin problems, reduce swelling and control some difficulties
involving excess nervousness and erratic sensitivity. Gamma-linoleic
acid also is thought to nutritionally help the body lower levels
of unstored circulating fats, but the process is yet unproven.
What is known is that GLA must be in sufficient supply so that
prostaglandins can be made by the body. Prostaglandins control
a multitude of essential functions in the body such as high
blood pressure, arthritis, menstrual cramps, allergies, asthma,
migraine headaches, fertility, glaucoma and even weight control
among others. Prostaglandins cannot be stored. Every tissue
makes this family of hormone-like substances and precursors
as soon as they are needed, but only if sufficient supplies
of GLA are present. Oil of Evening Primrose is a marvelous way
in which to supplement for GLA, ensuring the family of critically
important prostaglandins can be made on demand.
