Nepeta cataria (Labiatae, Catnip/Catmint)
Nepeta cataria is a naturally
growing herb that is commonly referred to as catnip. The fact
that cats find this herb to be particularly unforgettable and
alluring has some basis in science. Historically, when Nepeta
cataria was actually cultivated for ancient medicinal use, its
dried and prepared leaves were smoked to yield a mildly hallucinogenic
state which was used in less favorable times to relieve one
from the "pressures of life." Today, catnip is known to contain
vitamin C, and its natural and unprepared leaves are safely
used to promote sleepiness and relaxation, acting as a mild
stress reducer and calming agent, especially useful in restless
and colic children who find it difficult to sleep soundly or
sleep all through the night without disruption.
