Lycopodium clavatium (Lycopodium clavatium/huperzi)
Lycopodium clavatium is an herb
not found abundantly within the U.S. which has been used historically
in the manufacture of explosives, the spores being highly flammable,
fireworks and flash powders. However, recently this Chinese
herb has been touted because it is thought to improve the powers
of memory and even abate Alzheimer's disease because of Lycopodium
clavatium's ability to block the enzyme cholinesterase which
breaks down Acetylcholine in the brain.
In studies both in the U.S. and China, Lycopodium clavatium
has been found to be to be more potent than THA (tetrahydroaminoacidine-
now being studied in the U.S. for treatment against Alzheimer's)
but far less toxic. Chemical components contain Huperzine A,
an alkaloid which has shown to improve cognitive function, short-term
and long-term memory in patients suffering from cerebral arteriosclerosis
with memory impairment, working in the cholinergic system. Animal
studies also show improved learning and memory function. Huperzine
A is thought to be more potent than the commonly used cholinesterase
inhibitor physostigmine, and more powerful than THA.
