Ligustrum Lucidum
Grown in China, Ligustrum lucidum,
or the Chinese privet or Glossy privet, is a small shrub or
tree. A commercial insect wax is produced from the branches,
but it has well known other medicinal value as well, including
the use of the leaves and bark in the treatment of abscesses,
cold, congestion, headache, swelling and vertigo. It is also
considered a febrifuge (fever-reducing), and the bark as a diaphoretic.
The dried fruit is used for hepatitis, weak kidneys and generally
as a detoxifier, cleansing the body and restoring the "sprightliness
of youth." Extracts of the plant have recently demonstrated
antitumor activity.
