Leucine (L-Leucine)
Leucine, or L-leucine in its natural
form, is an essential amino acid. It is one of the three amino
acids which are called the branched chain amino acids (BCAAs).
BCAAs make up about 50% of the indispensable amino acids in
the daily food supply. BCAAs are rather unique in that skeletal
muscles may directly use them as an energy source. BCAAs are
used up more rapidly in stressful conditions than other amino
acids. Furthermore, research has suggested that the supplementation
of BCAAs, especially leucine, can nutritionally aid the body
in enlivening the liver, especially after extended periods of
alcohol abuse or other drug related damage.
Leucine is an anabolic substance which promotes the body's building-up
of materials, accelerating protein synthesis. Leucine is a major
nutritional metabolic regulator and is the only amino acid that
can substitute for glucose in the fasting animal. It is an alternative
energy source for the body, and the most able to help the body
maintain blood sugar levels. Leucine is also thought to be a
nutritional precursor to the naturally occurring, hurt-relieving
chemicals in our body called leucine-enkephalins.
