Leonurus cardiaca (Labiatae, Motherwort)
Leonurus cardiaca is a hardy perennial
with a pungent odor and bitter taste. This plant is commonly
called Throw-wort, Motherwort, Lion's Ear, and Lion's Tail.
Leonurus cardiaca's light oil, which in contrast has a pleasant
lemony scent, is used cosmetically as a faint but pleasing cleanser
when used in moderation. This ingredient has been used traditionally
for heart problems, and it is said to reduce the incidence of
muscle spasms and regulate heartbeat. The name Motherwort comes
from its use during and after childbirth, as it is said to ease
the pain of labor, as well as regulate menstruation and promote
the health of the uterus. Leonurus cardiaca is also said to
relieve tension and calm nerves, particularly during childbirth.
