Lemon (Lemon Extract, Rutaceae, Citrus lemon)
The fruit, juice, and peel of
the lemon are rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as being
a natural antioxidant -- that's why lemon juice keeps apples
and avocados, for example, from turning brown (becoming oxidized)
- but little known is the fact that those same properties are
helpful in keeping the skin fresh and moist as well. The antioxidant
properties of lemon nutritionally aid the skin, possibly enhancing
the body's abilities to naturally rid itself of free radicals.
A buildup of free radicals is believed partially responsible
for causing premature wrinkling and may retard the body's natural
sloughing of the skin as well. With lemon, of course, comes citric
acid, which is one of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids and are naturally
accepted by the skin and hair follicles of the scalp of young
people.
This is thought to be one of the nutritional reasons why their
skin remains so supple and taunt, naturally sloughing to retain
their youthful appearance. Lemon adds sparkle and highlights
to hair as well, and again because of its antioxidant properties,
its sheen and brilliance are thereafter protected.
