Lavandula (Labiatae, L. officinalis, Lavandula)
Tranquility and purity are inherent
in the unique fragrance of lavender. But it has many other properties
less known but perhaps more beneficial. Historically, Lavendula
(lavender) has been found to soothe and calm the nerves, relieving
stress and feelings of anxiousness when taken internally. When
applied topically, it has been useful in relieving skin sores
and inflammation and is quite soothing when applied to bath
water, presumably because of the sweet inhalant combining with
the warmth of the surrounding waters. There are even notions
of Lavendula (Lavender) being useful in the soothing of irritable
and unmindful children by placing the herb-oil in their bath
water, or placing a small bunch beneath their pillow at night!
