Kava Kava (Kava, Piper methysticum)
Captain Cook discovered the Kava
Kava plant to the west, although it was used for centuries in
the South Pacific. Cook named the plant "intoxicating pepper."
Kava is used as an analgesic sedative to relieve pain in rheumatic
complaints, alleviate insomnia and calm nervousness. It was
used by the Tahitians and Fijians to create an intoxicating
social drink in small doses. Kava Kava is a powerful muscle
relaxant in relieving muscle tension. Hawaiians used it for
everything from soothing nerves to promoting sleep as well as
an aid to asthma and congestion in the urinary tract., and even
used the leaf as a poultice for treating headaches and to help
patients break a cold or fever.
In a study published in 1997 involving 101 people suffering
from anxiety, Kava Kava demonstrated itself to be an effective
alternative to synthetic antianxiety drugs with proven long-term
efficacy and none of the tolerance problems associated with
synthetic drugs. The herb's relaxing properties appear to be
due to kavalactones, compounds in Kava Kava that relax muscles
without blocking nerve signals, and can change brain activity
in humans without sedation. Being also a potent analgesic when
used as an external agent, Kava Kava can be applied directly
to a painful wound or may be taken internally. It has also been
used for the treatment of gonorrhea in the South seas.
