Isoleucine (L-Isoleucine)
Isoleucine is an essential amino acid, one of the three
critically important amino acids known as the Branched
Chain Amino Acids (BCAA). BCAA's make up about 50% of
the indispensable amino acids in the daily food supply.
BCAA's are rather unique in that skeletal muscles may
directly use them as an energy source. Isoleucine is
an anabolic substance which promotes protein synthesis.
BCAA's are used up more rapidly in stressful conditions
than other amino acids.
Isoleucine is generally found to be deficient in chronically
sick individuals. It is nutritionally useful in the
formation of hemoglobin and is particularly important
too in building the body's tolerance for stress. In
fact, in experimental situations, deficiency of isoleucine
resulted in the occurrence of marked tremors and the
twitching of the muscles of the extremities in controlled
studies.
