Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid is a glycosaminoglycan/mucopolysaccharide
that is a component of the ground substance of intercellular
material. Hyaluronic acid is found in most connective tissues,
including the human placenta, joint synovial fluid and the eyes
(vitreous fluids. Its name is derived from hyaloid (vitreous)
and uronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is composed of equimolar proportions
of D-glucuronic acid and acetyl glucosamine occupying alternating
positions in the molecule. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful moisturizer
present in the epidermis that protects cellular system from
external effects and stabilizes skin's water content. In solution
it occupies a volume approximately 1000 times that in its dry
state, holding 1000 times its size of water. A natural moisturizer
with the ideal balance of water-absorbing and holding properties.
Regenerative properties occur in part because of the role in
plays in being a part of the ground substance of all intercellular
material, allowing cells to be held together in a flexible and
porous "glue," but also because of its abilities to clear interstitial
passages within the dermis of plaque forming materials, actually
dissolving them and allowing new tissue to regenerate thereafter.
Hyaluronic acid is often used in hypodermic syringes in combination
with other drugs or fluids needing intravenous administration
by physicians; it allows drugs to enter the skin more easily
because of its "lubricating" properties, and thus the medicine
can more quickly enter the blood stream less impeded. Indeed,
hyaluronic acid demonstrates excellent viscoelastic behavior
which makes it an excellent biological shock absorber and lubricant.
