HMB
HMB stands for beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate
and is found in both plants and animals. HMB is a metabolite
of the amino acid L-Leucine, a branched chain amino acid, and
helps to minimize protein breakdown within the body subsequent
to metabolic stress caused by injury, surgery or even intense
exercise. There is reason to believe that HMB output is increased
in times of metabolic injury (burn injury), but may become quickly
depleted because of increased protein catabolism. Four completed
human clinical studies have shown that when supplementing with
HMB, additional protein mass in the form or muscle can be added
over and above that of control groups; however, these studies
only looked at muscle building potentials of body builders.
Generally the body produces up to one gram of its own HMB daily,
wherein 5% of dietary leucine is converted. Catfish and grapefruit
contain relatively large amounts of HMB naturally.
