Gum Guggul (Commiphora Mukul Tree, Myrrh, Guggal R

Gum guggul is a tree that grows in the Levant, Somalia, and throughout India. Myrrh is a granular secretion (a resin) which is discharged into cavities in the bark when it is wounded. The pale yellow exudate hardens to a red-brown mass about the size of a walnut. It has been used since before biblical times in incense, perfumes, in the holy oil of Jewish ceremonies, and by the Egyptians as an element of 'kypji', for embalming. 'Meetiga' was the trade name for Arabian Myrrh, which is more brittle and gummy than Somalia Myrrh, without the latter's white markings.

Gum guggul is generally used for topical treatment of mild inflammations of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa. Recent research indicates that the internal use of this resin has been found to lower total blood cholesterol ranging from 22-27%, regardless of whether or not the patient changes their diet. Gum guggul acts to bring down LDL and the VLDL components which clog the arteries, while raising the beneficial HDL level at the same time. Gum guggul has also been shown to reduce triglyceride levels according the Indian Journal of Medical Research, April, 1988.

Ayurvedic medicine has successfully used the resin for over 2500 years as a treatment for what is now known as atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Also of some interest is that Gum guggul constituents has been identified as a mild thyroid stimulant which promotes enzymatic activity and improves the thyroid's ability to absorb iodine. Interestingly, poor thyroid and high cholesterol levels are generally correlated. Gum guggul thus can safely increase the body's metabolism via thyroid stimulation, which in turn, generally results in weight loss at the healthy rate of no more than 1 pound per week.
