Glycine (L-Glycine)
Glycine is an amino acid known
to be the simplest molecular amino known, essential for the
natural production of bile acids and nucleic acids. This is
an important amino acid which is part of the tripeptide glutathione,
a detoxifying agent essential for good health. Glycine is known
to be a hypolipidemic agent (it acts to reduce lipid synthesis)
and aids in the further reduction of cholesterol and triglycerides
in the blood plasma.
L-Glycine also acts like taurine in its natural calming properties.
It is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain, readily
and easily passing the brain-blood barrier, working in conjunction
with GABA and Taurine as a natural anticonvulsant. Interestingly,
depressed and epileptic patients often have low glycine levels
in their plasma.
Glycine is essentially important, too, in the photochemical
reaction of the eye and is necessary for good vision. It is
an important nutrient in wound healing, giving the skin its
natural elasticity and bounce, protecting us from premature
sagging and wilt, being a necessary constituent of collagen.
In fact, glycine in the form of gelatin, a protein which is
made up of 33% glycine, has been found to be useful in wound
healing.
