Flax Seed (Flax Seed Powder, Linum usitatissimum)
Flax was widely, if not extensively,
in use in Ancient Egypt. Seeds and cloth have even been found
in the pyramids. It has many biblical references, its use for
sails is mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. There is an ancient Bohemian
belief that if children dance among flax when they are about
seven years old, they will grow up beautiful. The plant was
considered to be under the protection of the Teutonic goddess
Hulda, who taught mortals the art of growing, spinning and weaving
it.
Linseed is used mainly for coughs; the oil, mixed with lime
water, relieves burns and scalds. In sufficient quantities Flax
Seed has gentle laxative effects due to increases in volume
and consequent initiation of intestinal peristalsis due to stretching
reflexes, and there is a helpful protective effect on the mucosa
because of the coating action. More recently, Flax seed is valued
because of the many essential fatty acids it contains, including
Omega 3's and Omega-6's, and their usefulness in the development
and repair of the neurophysiology.
