Ferrous Fumarate
Ferrous fumarate is a reddish
orange and brown orderless powder of iron that is slightly soluble
in water and is used in the clinical management of iron-deficiency
anemias. Its efficacy is about the same as that of ferrous sulfate
but is less severe. Too large of a dosage of ferrous fumarate
is defined as greater than 200-300 mg/daily, and like other
iron preparations, large doses may exacerbate gastrointestinal
diseases, especially ulcerative ones. However, the untoward
effects are greatly reduced if taken when eating. Smaller dosages
of ferrous fumarate [less than 20 mg/daily] generally cause
no problem whatsoever.
