Estrogen
A group of hormones which includes
a number of estradiol, estrone, polyestradiol, estriol, estrone,
and estropipate compounds. Naturally secreted by the ovarian
follicles and small amounts by the adrenal glands, estrogen
stimulates and regulates the growth and development of the uterus,
the vaginal mucous membrane, and also other structures such
as mammary glands, subcutaneous fat, axillary and pubic hair,
and certain elements of the skin, these latter comprising the
secondary sex characteristics.
Of the estrogens, the most potent occurring naturally is beta-estradiol,
and its two principal metabolic products, estrone and estriol,
which are also estrogenic. Useful clinically in reducing the
symptoms of menopause when given in small dosages, and with
progesterone. Some research also suggests that it may help prevent
the onset of other degenerative diseases including cardiovascular
disease, osteoporosis and senility. Naturally occurring estrogens
from plant sources (as Vaxa uses, see phytosterols) are far
more stable and safely bioavailable to the body than most synthetics,
or those derived from animal sources. Can be used in local administration
or ingested orally without difficulty.
