Elderberry flowers (Sambucus canadensis, Sambucus)
Elderberry is an herb that has
historically been used to change bodily processes, especially
those concerned with the lower tract, having been used by Native
Americans as a natural laxative from infusions of its flowers.
Elderberry flowers have had many other folk remedies which apparently
included animal husbandry. Quite interestingly, when the pith
is removed from its stems, it makes an excellent nesting place
for solitary bees, especially near alfalfa fields where their
presence aids in pollination. Topically, Elderberry flowers
contain a number of essential oils and are thus considered a
skin restorative while cleansing soars and bruises.
