Echinacea angustifolia (Echinacea purpurea)
This herb has been widely used
for enhancement of the immune system, having some antioxidant
effects as well in helping the body prevent thymus gland involution.
Echinacea was one of the primary medicinal agents of the past
century, used to treat common fevers and minor infections, as
well as typhoid, meningitis, malaria and diptheria, and is still
an expedient treatment of infectious diseases today. It has
been found to destroy the germs of infection directly and increase
the white blood count. It exhibits antiseptic and anesthetic
properties. It is also thought to help detoxify and pull waste
residues out of the lymph glands.
More specifically, Echinacea has recently been found to bolster
the Hyaluronidase System (HA-System: one of the primary defense
systems of the body) by preventing an enzyme from dissolving
essential Hyaluronic Acid, the substance that occurs in the
tissues between cells and acts to literally "cement" them together.
The HA-System subsequently forms an effective barrier against
invading disease. But if the enzyme is allowed to attack body
tissue, the "cement" between cells quickly loses its viscosity,
like gelatin turning to water, allowing pathogenic bacteria
such as staph and strep to penetrate the tissue and make us
ill.
A similar mechanism is thought to be involved in rheumatism
and tumor formation and the beginning of malignancy, and perhaps
as well is the mechanism behind the deadly Ebola virus which
acts to dissolve body tissue. Again, Echinacea acts to effectively
close the door on one of the major ways in which we can become
infected, making the body resistive to the destructive enzyme
activity (be it initiated from a pathogen or overly produced
by the body itself), and then facilitates fibrous connective
tissue regeneration, accelerating the production of granulomatous
tissue which is necessary and essential for healing while exhibiting
antiinflammatory effects demonstrating cortisone-like activity.
Lastly, German research on Echinacea has demonstrated that Echinacin,
the active phytomedicinal in Echinacea, exhibits interferon-like
activity, increases T-cell action, has a stimulating effect
on the Lymph system (increasing the ability to carry waste tissue
away from areas of infection), and protects cells against virus
related diseases such herpes, influenza, canker sores, etc. Also
used as a Homeopathic or used simply as a micro-nutritional
(botanical).
(Homeopathic potencies accredit their strength and efficacy
to the electromagnetic signatures of the original substrate;
these are scientifically created dilutions and succussions of
medicines such that generally not even a molecule of the original
substrate or medicine is present in the medicine). As a Homeopathic
or used simply as a micro-nutritional, it has demonstrated effectiveness
against the following symptomology: exhausted, tired, sick feeling
("felt as if I had been sick for a long time" -- remark of one
of Echinacea's provers); -muscular weakness; general aching
all over, with exhaustion; -diminution of red blood corpuscles
(Clarke) -"This remedy is indicated in cases of blood poisoning
and septic conditions; they may be the result of an autoinfection,
defective elimination or from poisons introduced from without."
(Blackwood) -"corrector of blood dyscrasia": acute autoinfection,
symptoms of blood-poisoning, septic conditions generally; venom
infection -cerebrospinal meningitis; puerperal infections; last
stages of cancer to ease pain; -tendency to malignancy in acute
and subacute disorders; -foul discharges with emaciation and
great debility; tired feeling; -recurring boils; carbuncles;
lymphatic glands enlarged; old tibial ulcers; gangrene; bed
sores (Boericke).
"This remedy is indicated in cases of blood-poisoning and septic
conditions: they may be the result of autoinfection, defective
elimination or from poisons introduced from without." (Blackwood)
-antidotal to vaccinal poisoning; -exhausted, tired feeling;
felt as if had been sick for a long time; general aching all
over, with exhaustion; -diminution of red blood cells (Clarke).
