DHEA (Dehydroepiandtrosterone)
DHEA is a pro-hormone that produces
other hormones and the most abundant natural steroid in the
bloodstream, including estrogen complexes and testosterone.
The body's natural DHEA production decreases dramatically with
age; on average it's estimated that only around 5% of DHEA's
original surpluses are found when we're 80 years old. Such decreases
are now thought to be associated with the onset of many degenerative
diseases. Additional supplementation of DHEA in some studies
reveals that some aging can possibly be reversed, immune system
functioning is apparently enhanced and healing proceeds more
rapidly.
Low dosages of DHEA (less than 20 mg daily) are generally safe
and do not interfere or compete with hormonal production within
the body. However, larger dosages of DHEA (200+ mg daily) have
been associated with increases in facial hair growth in women
and possible liver damage, and thus should be avoided. Thus,
taking large dosages of DHEA alone as a solitary hormonal replacement
strategy should not be practiced.
