Cystine (L-Cystine)
Cystine is usually found in its
natural form L-Cystine. This amino acid is an integral part
of the insulin molecule and therefore thought to be one of the
reasons for its necessity, especially in glucose metabolism
and fatty acid use. It is thought to be useful as well in the
natural care and nurturing of new tissue orchestrated by the
body. Its sulfur-rich amino group has been found useful in soothing
and caring for a variety of skin conditions.
Made from the bonding of two cysteine molecules, very little
is found in its free form within the bloodstream. Cystine helps
hold other protein molecules in shape as they are being transported
around the body, and it is this amino acid that gives or determines
the form and mechanical properties of many animal and plant
proteins, including your skin! For example, the fibrous protein
gluten (made from cystine) gives wheat dough its elasticity,
and high cystine keratin (16% of keratin is cystine), makes
tortoise shell hard and human hair curly or straight. It may
allow balding men to help retain their hair (unproven), and
allows skin to appear smooth and supple instead of rough and
patchy.
