CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10, Ubiquinone)
CoQ10 was only discovered in 1957
by Professor F.L. Crane and his associates at the University
of Wisconsin, and soon thereafter Merck Laboratories discovered
the chemical structure. CoQ10, or Ubiquinone, is a coenzyme
which is essential to the body's production of energy in the
form of ATP, providing energy at the cellular level.
CoQ10, or 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-decaprenyl-1,4-benzoquinone,
is a lipid soluble compound that inhabits the inside walls of
inner mitochondrial membranes where it functions as an integral
part of electron transport of oxidative phosphorylation. CoQ10
is essential for production of aerobic cellular energy in the
form of ATP. Research from leading medical institutions have
demonstrated that with the addition of CoQ10 to the diet, serious
illnesses can often be reversed and thereinafter prevented.
It's now known that CoQ10 not only boosts energy levels and
increases stamina and endurance, but also strengthens and protects
the heart against cardiovascular disorders and heart disease/stroke
(cardiac patients have lower levels of CoQ10 throughout the
body than do healthy people, specifically showing deficiencies,
of between 50-%75%, of CoQ10 within t he heart itself), improves
the effectiveness of the immune system, actually reverses periodontal
disease (gum disease), normalizes high blood pressure, aids
in weight loss, improves the therapeutic value of various drugs,
as well as acts as a powerful antioxidant protecting the body
against free radicals.
It generally takes at least 8 weeks of daily supplementation
of CoQ10 to reach peak levels within the body and blood supply.
However, long-term oral supplementation with CoQ10 is needed
for human chronic dilated cardiomyopathy, wherein CoQ10 use
was associated with improvement in cardiac function and increased
survival. Thus, the effects of CoQ10 are not generally immediate.
The timing of first appearance benefits in controlled studies
was between 3 and 6 months, which correlates well with the known
coenzymatic functions of nutrients stimulating apoenzyme synthesis
and incorporation before functions were biochemically manifested.
In Japan, CoQ10 is approved for the treatment of congestive
heart failure and cardiac ischemis, there being over 150 pharmaceutical
preparations now available. For the best benefits of CoQ10,
one should expect to be on the supplement for the rest of ones
life, and too, the effectiveness of CoQ10 is enhanced with other
anabolic metabolites, as can be found in Vaxa formulas. CoQ10
is completely safe and considered a food supplement by the FDA.
