Cinnamomum verum (Cinnamon)
The dried bark of Cinnamomum verum
was used by the Egyptians in their embalming mixtures and was
first listed by the Chinese in the Tang Materia Medica in 659
A.D. Cinnamon works to help calm down the stomach and also reduce
milk flow. It has been useful, too, in helping stop uterine
hemorrhaging and excessive menstrual flow. It's also been used
for the discomforts and pain of menopause.
Japanese researchers have shown that Cinnamon contains a substance
that is both antifungal and antibacterial. It helps control
the virulent actions of many microorganisms including the one
which causes Botulism (a food poisoning which can be lethal)
and S. Aureus, a source of staff infections. It acts strongly
against the fungi that produces aflatoxin, a potent poison and
carcinogen. It has obvious advantages in making apple pie taste
better as well!
