Cimicifuga racemosa (Black Cohosh, Black Snake Root)
Pharmacological studies have demonstrated
that Black Cohosh contains substances which exhibit endocrine
activity which is estrogen-like in character, causing selective
reduction of the serum concentration of pituitary luteinizing
hormone (LH) and/or able to bind to estrogen receptors. Thus
estrogen-like action, luteinizing hormone suppression and a
binding to estrogen receptors has been noted in the treatment
of neurovegetative and psychic problems associated with the
menopause and easing the symptoms of post-menopause, including
depressed moods, hot and cold flashes with associated sweating,
dryness of vagina, headaches, irregular periods, mood swings,
nervousness and sleeping difficulties.
Black cohosh is used widely in Europe and Great Britain as a
safe alternative to synthetic hormone therapy and hormone replacement
therapy. Recently, plant-based estrogen complexes (called phyto-estrogens),
like those found in Black Cohosh, have been found to be completely
safe and carry with it the added benefit of being anticarcinogenic
(keep cells from becoming cancerous) and exhibit antiangiogenetic
(tumor reducing) activities. Moreover, it was found that the
use of phyto-estrogens are correlated with decreased rates of
breast cancer over and above the general population Yet interestingly,
it was also found that non-plant based HRT (Hormone Replacement
Therapy) is linked to substantial increases in the risk for
breast cancer, and the risk increases the longer non-plant based
HRT is used.
Black Cohosh is indicated for menopausal disorder, premenstrual
complaints, dysmenorrhoea, uterine spasm, as well as muscular
rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis, and interestingly, tinnitus.
