Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin sulfates are polysaccharides
containing D-glucuronic acid and acetyl galactosamine. Their
general structure is similar, but they differ in content and
location of sulfate ester groups in the molecule. Chondroitin
contains only a small number of sulfate ester groups whereas
chondroitin sulfates have more. The latter have a high viscosity
and a capability for binding water, and in connective tissue
apparently performs similarly to that of hyaluronic acid (a
glycosaminoglycan/mucopolysaccharide which is component of the
ground substance of intercellular material, containing D-glucuronic
acid and acetyl glucosamine).
Chondroitin is a component of the cell coat, and chondroitin
4-sulfate is the principle organic component of the ground substance
of cartilage and bone. If the chondroitins are not found abundantly,
regeneration and healing of tissues is possibly undermined and
delayed. Thus, its has proven nutritionally supportive and useful
in any form of bone and cartilage reconstructive needs, such
as arthritis, and complements other pre- and postsurgical strategies.
