Choline
Choline is a vitamin cofactor
which is believed to aid or be important in memory function,
being a necessary precursor to the important neurotransmitter,
Acetylcholine (via acetyl-CoA), the most powerful neurochemical
known for memory transport and function. (Also see Phosphatidylcholine/lecithin).
As an important cofactor for the B vitamins, Choline is thought
to aid the body in its natural ability to lower cholesterol
(as a source of fatty acid for esterification of cholesterol
by lecithin cholesterol acyl transferace: L-CAT) while soothing
nerves. It is thought necessary for the storage of vitamin A.
Choline is also present in all cellular membranes and as a component
of all lipoproteins, and acts too as a source of methyl groups
when insufficient methionine is present in the diet. Thus, it
is thought to be indirectly involved in the removal of the dangerous
buildup of Homocystine from the system.
Choline, being involved in protein synthesis, is also thought
to be useful in helping the body maintain natural, healthy skin
and hair, and generally is more active when in the presence
of certain vitamins, especially B6.
