Chitosan
Chitosan is derived from the exoskeletons
of crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. This ingredient is
a polymer of glucosamine, demonstrates cholesterol-lowering
action within the liver, and is capable of reversing adverse
changes provoked by high cholesterol diets, including plasma
Cholesterol, increasing HDL--Cholesterol, liver weight, and
HMG-CoA reductase mRNA levels in animal populations, proving
to be effective maintaining the required equilibrium between
the elimination of exogenous Cholesterol and de nova Cholesterol
synthesis. Total levels of Cholesterol and Cholesterol ratios
of LDL and HDL were lowered with the use of Chitosan, as well
as reducing total triglycerides.
